Chocolate isn’t just a human weakness- even dogs can’t resist its allure! If you open a new chocolate bar, your pup will come running for a whiff of the sweet scent. Of course, sugar is a dog’s kryptonite, so it’s okay to give them a little chocolate in moderation?
No way! People often get confused over this. A part of the reason why is that they are loaded with sugar. But that’s not all. Chocolates contain chemicals that are difficult for the dog to metabolize. They can cause diarrhea, stomach pain, and vomiting. And if you aren’t careful enough, it will lead to dehydration. While the severity of side effects will depend upon your dog’s size and the amount of chocolate it ate, experts say even as little as 20 milligrams per body weight can be dangerous. Chocolate can have a variety of dangerous side effects, such as internal bleeding, heart attacks, and seizures.
However, unsweetened chocolate is even more dangerous for dogs because it contains a higher concentration of cocoa powder. In short, the darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is for dogs.
